Blind Ambition
I'm inspired to write today thinking about what some world famous athletes are going through currently.  Tiger Woods game is falling apart with his attention diverted to family and divorce matters; Ben Cousins (Australian AFL) is about to have his story of drugs shared on Australian TV, Brett Favre retiring and unretiring again - it got me asking myself questions about the meaning we place on sporting success.  For an athlete to be as superb an infallible as Tiger seemed to be, does there have to be a sacrifice on other areas of life?  Is it worth it?  Does success in sport make up for poor results in relationships or other areas?  What would happen if athletes were less ambitious?

Federer has Focus
Have you seen the latest video of Roger Federer? In preparing for an advertisement for Gillette he demonstrates the accuracy of his serve, knocking a bottle off someone's head with the tennis ball.  Whether it's a trick shot or trick camera work, I think it highlights the power of focus and how fine-tuned you want to be to get results.  What you focus on determines your results, so how accurate are you?  Let's look at focus from three different angles.

Favre needs to Decide!
Last year Brett Favre milked the 'will he, won't he' train for all it was worth in eventually deciding not to retire.  He has been silent, up until yesterday when announced his retirement?  Rather than focusing on whether he should or shouldn't retire (I did enough of that last year) I am inspired to talk about the power of decision.  You see, many people avoid or delay making decisions for fear of making the wrong one.  I will let you in on a secret - there are no wrong decisions!!

Change before life changes you.
Sometimes you have got to change.  If what you are doing is not working, then change something.  Australian AFL player, Jason Akermanis has hit the news again after being sacked from the Western Bulldogs just 6 weeks out from finals.  Akermanis is renowned for his love of the right to free speech - he writes newspaper columns and is on radio and TV as well as playing top-grade football.  Unfortunately he doesn't know the line between free speech and loyalty to team-mates and for the second time in his career has been let go because of this.  Has he not learned from past mistakes?

Esteem by Association
I was so excited for the Netherlands when they made their first FIFA World Cup final since 1978.  Could 'we' win it this time?  Both my parents are Dutch and even though I was born in Australia I am proud of my Dutch ancestry and keenly support the success of teams from the Netherlands.  It went pear-shaped on Sunday though as Spain dashed 'our' hopes in the last minutes of the extra time with a goal.  "They" lost.  It got me thinking about a concept described by Robert Cialdini in his book "Influence - the Psychology of Persuasion".
